The Great Pollet Arch - Portsalon Co. Donegal 2022

For decades the Great Pollet Sea Arch (or pollaid if you prefer), has been shrouded from view by rocky cliffs and grassy landscapes surrounding the magnificent rock. Only those adventurous souls willing to trek muddy fields and hurdle high fences were able to view her majesty first hand. But starting this summer she will be hidden no more!  This natural wonder of Fanad Peninsula is now being opened up for all to see.

“The Great Arch Access Project” is an undertaking by the Donegal County Council. This project includes a walkway, viewing area and a car park. The project is nearly complete, expected to be finished by summer 2022.

I recently visited this outdoor attraction and I was gobsmacked by the effort that went into making the Great Arch truly accessible to visitors and locals alike. There is a long gravel path, fenced on both sides with benches along the way if you need a breather or you just want to sit and enjoy the views. At the end of the path there are steps over the fence for those who wish to get even closer, (warning, it can be treacherous with slippery rocks, so you should proceed only if you are confident and surefooted). Whichever way you go, you will walk away feeling blessed at the sight of this natural wonder.

I am sure there will be those who have a sense of disappointment at the prospect of an “easy route”.  But never fear, for the adrenaline junkies there will always be back ways along steep cliffs and barbed wire! As for the rest of us, who have always wanted to see this monument first hand without risking life or limb, the new path is a godsend.

HOW TO GET THERE

Travel towards Doagh Beg, when you pass the small shop and petrol station, bear left and follow the sign. Turn right at the granite marker for the townland of Pollet (see the photo above). If the parking lot is not open keep driving until the road ends. The entrance gate is at the end of the lane.
